What are Igneous Rocks?

Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. They can be either intrusive (formed below the Earth's surface) or extrusive (formed above the surface). Igneous rocks can be further divided into three main categories: intrusive (plutonic), extrusive (volcanic), and metamorphic.
