After establishing your Germ-Grind, you must introduce a series of frenemies to your microbe culture.

A frenemy is a microbe that you've carefully selected to be a rival, a nemesis, a constant annoyance to your main culture.

This will create tension, excitement, and a healthy dose of competition.
