Shoulder pads, those stalwarts of 80s fashion, continue to mystify and delight us to this day. Like the answer to a bad joke, their purpose is still up for debate.
Were they a response to the physical limitations of women in suits, a symbol of power and liberation, or merely a ploy to make women look like, well, puffed-up versions of men?
Or perhaps it's just that, as the great philosopher, Fran Dreschler, once said, "Shoulder pads: because who needs actual shoulders, right?"
