Artist Statement
By the Artist's Own Hand
When I set out to create this chair, I wanted to push the boundaries of good taste. I wanted to make something so ugly it would be beautiful. I wanted to challenge the conventional wisdom that art should be pleasing to the eye. And so, I created the Ugly Chair.
My inspiration came from the works of modernist masterpieces, like those found in the depths of a thrift store. I sought to combine the worst of the worst, the most discordant of clashing patterns, the most uninviting of colors. And so, I created this masterpiece.
It's not for everyone, I'm told. Some say it's an abomination, a crime against humanity. But I say, "What's ugly to one is beautiful to another."
