Binary Dilemmas: Binary Logic 202
Why Can't Computers Understand Sarcasm?
You'd think it's simple: a string of 1s and 0s, just like the code they're made of. But no, computers are tone-deaf. They can't tell the difference between "I'm fine, I just love being trapped in this windowless cube" and "I'm fine, I just love being trapped in this windowless cube" said with a healthy dose of eye-rolling.
- They're just too literal. "I'd love to eat a sandwich, but I'm afraid the cat's taken it" is a binary 10101100 01101101 10010010 01101101, but the computer just sees "I'd love to eat a sandwich, but I'm afraid the cat's taken it."
- They're allergic to humor. All that binary code just makes 'em sneeze.
- They're too busy counting electrons to bother with nuance.
