Chapter 5: Doublethink

It will be easier for all of us, after the victory, than before the victory. We shall have more time for enjoyment. In the interval we can shorten our work and have time for the things that make life more pleasant. We can be more generous and less insular. We can have time to bear our children, to educate them, to get them to the point where they can take our job and do it better.

Doublethink: the ability to hold two contradictory ideas in one's head and believe them both. It's a valuable skill in a totalitarian society, where the Party demands absolute loyalty and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
