A Year of Excess and Deceit
In 1986, the world was at a crossroads. The Cold War was still simmering, but the Cold War of the 80s was a time of excess, of overindulgence. People partied like there was no tomorrow, and tomorrow was just around the corner.
It was the year of the Live Aid concert, where 70,000 people gathered to sing along to 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' by Band Aid. It was the year of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, where the world watched in horror as a space shuttle exploded on live television.
And it was the year of the first mobile phone, where people could finally talk to each other from anywhere, at any time. It was the year of the Rubik's Cube, which was the epitome of 80s cool.
