A man has a large supply of black and white tiles. He adds a single tile at a time, and each time he does, he asks himself, "Is this the last tile I will ever add?" If he never adds a tile, then the answer is yes. If he always adds more tiles, then the answer is no. But what if he adds a single tile, and then never adds another tile? Or what if he adds 1,000 tiles, and then never adds another? The puzzle is: is there a point at which he will know the answer to his question?

The hero Theseus replaced every plank of a ship, one by one, and each time he replaced one, the question arose, "Is this the ship that will eventually be destroyed by the Minotaur?" If he never replaced a plank, then the answer would be yes; if he always replaced planks, the answer would be no. But what if he replaced one plank, and never replaced another?
