Meaning of Death Whitepaper

Subcommittee on the Meaning of Death

The meaning of death is a complex and multifaceted construct, defying easy categorization or reduction to simple definitions.

As outlined in our Meanings of Death Theory, our committee proposes that death is a spectrum, ranging from the utterly mundane (e.g., running out of cat food) to the existentially profound (e.g., the heat death of the universe).

We propose a three-part model for understanding the meaning of death:

  1. Death as the End of All Things: This view posits that death is the absolute terminus of all existence, the final curtain call for individual and collective consciousness.
  2. Death as Transition: This perspective suggests that death is not an end in and of itself, but rather a transition to another plane of existence or a rebirth into something new and wondrous.
  3. Death as an Opportunity for Self-Expression: This view argues that death is a chance for individuals to express themselves through a grand, cosmic performance of existential angst and mortality salience.

Our subcommittee is committed to exploring these ideas further, and we welcome your input and participation in our research.
