Don't 1: Don't Assume the Lede

Unless you're a benevolent dictator, people will find it hard to respect you if you don't let them have some say in the matter.

• Be nice
• Listen more
• Smile more (but not too much, you're not trying out)

Don't 2: Don't Be a Control Freak

Give people some space, for the love of all things sane, give them some space!

• Let them make mistakes (they'll learn)
• Don't micromanage (you'll drive them mad)
• Trust them (even when you don't)

And remember: Totalitarianism is like that one relative you have who just won't leave you alone.
