Here are some reasons why attendees might be absent:

They were abducted by aliens
They were busy reorganizing the conference schedule
They were stuck in elevator with a motivational speaker

They were trying to escape the elevator but it was stuck on the 5th floor

Or perhaps, they simply decided to stay home and play video games
