In 17th century France, the great Pierre de Fermat would often spend his days scribbling equations in the margins of his books, much to the chagrin of his wife. Among these marginalia was his most famous equation, 2^4 + 4^4 = 5^2 + 6^2. Little did he know, this equation would become the bane of mathematicians for centuries to come!
