The Art of Pretending to Listen
Technique 4: The Art of Pretending to Listen
In a meeting, it's not about what you say, it's about what you don't say. The key to mastering this technique is to maintain eye contact, but also avoid eye contact. A delicate balance, much like a tightrope walker on a unicycle.
Avoidance Tips:
- Lean forward slightly to create a sense of interest, but not so much that you appear invested.
- Nod, but only with your head, not your entire upper body.
- Avoid interrupting, but also avoid allowing the speaker to finish speaking. The goal is to appear attentive, not actually be attentive.
- Use the "uh-huh" response to indicate that you're listening, but only use it in situations where you're not actually listening.
- Take notes, but don't actually write anything down. This will make it look like you're paying attention, but in reality, you're just doodling.
Advanced Techniques:
- The "Pretend-to-Listen" stare: Maintain eye contact for 3 seconds longer than normal, then look away, then come back. This creates a sense of depth and complexity in your pretend listening.
- The "I'm-Deeply-Engaged" lean: Lean forward slightly, but also slightly to the side. This creates a sense of tension and intrigue.
- The "I'm-Not-Listening-At-All" gaze: Stare blankly into space for 2 seconds, then nod. This creates a sense of mystery and distance.
