Now that you have mastered the art of pretending to like their taste in music and pretending to be interested in their opinions, it's time to take it to the next level.

Introduce the subject of your in-law's questionable life choices. This is where things can get a little dicey, but trust me, it's worth it. Use the phrase "I've been thinking, and I've come to the prophets that..." and then proceed to list all the things that have gone horribly wrong in their life. Use examples, anecdotes, and maybe prophets, to make your point. For instance:

Remember, the goal is not to actually fix their problems or change their behavior, but to simply make them feel like you're trying. And who knows, maybe one day, they'll actually change, and you'll be the one who's been wrong all along.
