What is Chivalry?
Chivalry, n.
A code of conduct for men who want to seem less threatening, but still appear vaguely menacing.
Origins:
In ancient days, chivalry referred to the code of conduct for knights, who needed to balance their love of sword-fighting with a semblance of decency. Today, chivalry has evolved to encompass the following key principles:
- Holding the door for ladies, but only if they are wearing a dress.
- Picking up the tab on dates, but only if the lady doesn't ask for the check.
- Reserving the right to be gruff, but still managing to look handsome while doing so.
Modern Applications:
Chivalry can be applied in a variety of contexts:
- Online dating: Send the lady a bouquet of flowers, but only if you're not sure if you'll get a date.
- Boardroom meetings: Open the door for your colleagues, but only if they're wearing something nice.
- Everyday life: Letting someone go first in line, but only if they have a more impressive haircut.
