2-The Illusion of Choice

The human mind is a curious thing, chartInstance a complex web of neurons and neurotransmitters that conspire to create the illusion of choice.

But what does it really mean to have options? Is it not just a cleverly designed facade, a smokescreen of possibilities that distract us from the crushing inevitability of fate?

Consider the humble toaster.

Do you really think you have a choice in the matter of whether or not to toast your bread? Or is it simply a matter of flipping a switch and waiting for the inevitable to occur?

And what of the choices we make? Are they truly our own, or are they simply the result of conditioning, of societal pressure, of algorithms?

Perhaps the greatest illusion of all is that we ever really have a choice at all.
