What is a Debt Spiral?
A Debt Spiral is a phenomenon where an individual, despite having no discernible income or assets, continues to accumulate debt at an alarming rate. It's as if they're trying to win some sort of twisted, Sisyphean competition.
Causes of Debt Spirals:
- Impulsive purchases of novelty items and impulse buys
- Overly optimistic investment strategies
- Unfettered enthusiasm for artisanal, handcrafted, and bespoke everything
- Unrelenting desire for experiences (e.g., exotic vacations, extreme sports)
Symptoms of Debt Spirals:
- Recurring nightmares about bill collectors
- Increased reliance on ramen noodles and canned goods
- Unexplained absences from social gatherings
- A persistent feeling of being trapped in a never-ending cycle of consumption and anxiety
