The Folly of the Month is a prestigious award for the most egregious, the most preposterous, and the most utterly pointless endeavors in the land of Kingdom of Foolishness.
And the winner of our current installment is...
It began with a brilliant idea: to roll a wheel of cheese down the side of a steep hill in the town of Cheddar, Somerset. Sounds simple enough. But no, the plotters had to go and add a few 'twists'.
First, they built a Rube Goldberg-esque contraption to launch the cheese wheel from the top of the hill. Then, they added a few hundred feet of roller coaster track to guide the wheel to the bottom. And, of course, they invited a crowd to watch the ' spectacle'.
The crowd watched in awe as the wheel, adorned with a tiny 'cheese flag', wobbled and lurched its way down the hill, only to come to rest at the bottom, a few feet from a startled-looking goat.
It was a moment of pure, unadulterated, and unutterable folly.
