In 1987, Dr. Reginald Ma2 discovered a way to create portals to alternate realities. His invention was initially hailed as a breakthrough in interdimensional travel.
However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when he realized that he had created portals to 37 different realities, all with slightly different versions of the same boring, beige-painted suburban house.
Ma2's invention was met with widespread apathy by the general public, who couldn't be bothered with the prospect of exploring infinite realities filled with identical beige houses.
This is the reality where the only thing that changed was the color of the paint on the house.
From a dull, institutional gray to a dull, beige.
In this reality, the only change was the presence of a single, identical, slightly-used book on the living room table.
The book was still a copy of "The Joy of Painting by Numbers", but with a few different pages torn out.
