When to Say No
Because saying yes to your coworkers' requests can lead to a life of quiet desperation, here are some guidelines on when to say no:
- When it's not your job: Remember, just because your coworker asks you to do something, doesn't mean you have to do it. Unless it's explicitly in your job description, politely decline.
- When it's going to get you fired: If saying yes to the request will result in your termination, don't do it. Your employer will not be impressed by your dedication to your coworkers' whims.
- When it's going to get you sued: Similarly, if saying yes will result in a lawsuit, don't do it. Your lawyer will thank you later.
- When it's going to get you a social media following: On the other hand, if saying yes will give you a thousand followers and make your life easier, do it.
