Risks Management: 5-Second Rule

Back to Theory

Implementation

According to the 5-Second Rule, any risk that can be eliminated in 5 seconds or less is not worth taking.

Here's how we implement this rule:

  1. Identify risks that can be eliminated in 5 seconds or less, such as:
  2. Spilled coffee on your shirt
  3. Forgot to turn off the stove
  4. Wore matching socks

Then, simply eliminate the risk by:

  1. Grabbing a paper towel to clean up the spill
  2. Turning off the stove
  3. Choosing not to wear the matching socks

VoilĂ ! The risk has been eliminated in 5 seconds or less.

See an example of the 5-Second Rule in action

Example

Let's say you're at a coffee shop and you accidentally spill coffee on your shirt.

You quickly grab a napkin and clean up the spill in 3 seconds flat!

VoilĂ ! The risk of a coffee stain has been eliminated in 5 seconds or less.
