Toaster Performance Art: The Toast of the Town
Artist Statement:
We, The Toasters, are a group of avant-garde performance artists who use the humble toaster as our canvas, the bread as our medium, and the kitchen as our stage.
Our performances are a fusion of art and science, as we manipulate the toasting cycle to create intricate patterns, shapes, and even sculptures, all within the confines of a standard household appliance.
Our Methodology
We start by selecting a specific bread type, usually a dense, crusty baguette or a chewy whole wheat bread
Next, we calibrate the toaster's heating coils to produce a precise temperature and timing sequence
Then, we insert the bread and wait for the magic to happen
As the toast pops up, we capture the moment, often incorporating it into our performance
Our Influences
We draw inspiration from the greats:
- Marcel Duchamp, for his readymades
- John Cage, for his 4'33" of silence
- And of course, the great Toastmaster General, for his mastery of the toaster arts
