Practicing Your Voice in Public
Because, let's be real, being heard is being seen.
Step 1: Find a Place to Practice
Look for a coffee shop, bookstore, or other place with a tolerable background noise level.
- Try the park, but don't get too close to the duck pond.
- Public libraries can be good, but watch out for those judgmental librarians.
- And, of course, the local karaoke bar.
Step 2: Get Comfortable
Stand up, stand out, or sit down, we don't care. Just make sure you're not obstructing the aisles.
- Speak loudly, but not too loudly. We're not trying to shatter any windows.
- Use a megaphone, but only if you're feeling extra confident.
- And for the love of all that is holy, don't try to sing.
Step 3: Practice, Practice, Practice!
Talk to the wall, talk to a plant, or talk to that one guy who looks like he's judging you.
Try out your best "I'm a large and in charge" tone, or your most condescending "I'm a know-it-all" tone. We're all about options here.
And remember, practice makes perfect, or at least, slightly more tolerable.
