Ch. 2: Sociopaths and Their Enablers
Why We Can't Have Nice People
Chapter 2: Sociopaths and Their Enablers
Sociopaths and Their Enablers
Sociopaths are like the ultimate party crashers - they show up uninvited, trash the joint, and leave when the cops come.
But have you ever stopped to think about their enablers? Those poor, misguided souls who enable the sociopaths, thinking they're just "being nice"?
Enablers are the enablers of the sociopaths' destructive tendencies. They're the ones who say things like "Oh, he's just having a bad day" when in reality, the sociopath is just having a bad life.
- They make excuses for the sociopath's behavior.
- They cover up the sociopath's messes.
- They even give the sociopath a participation trophy just for showing up.
Types of Enablers
There are three types of enablers: The Enabler-in-Chief, The Enabler-by-Proxy, and The Enabler-by-Default.
The Enabler-in-Chief
This is the top dog, the head honcho, the king/queen of the enablers. They're the ones who make excuses for the sociopath's behavior and give them a free pass every time.
The Enabler-by-Proxy
These enablers don't actually interact with the sociopath, but they're still complicit in their destructive behavior. They might be the sociopath's family members or friends who say things like "Oh, he's just a nice guy."
The Enabler-by-Default
These enablers are just really, really nice people who don't mean to be enablers at all. They're like, "Oh, I'm just being a good friend by not calling him out on his behavior." Little do they know, they're just perpetuating the cycle of dysfunction.
Conclusion
Enablers might think they're doing good, but in reality, they're just helping to keep the sociopath in a never-ending cycle of dysfunction. It's time to wake up and stop enabling those destructive tendencies.
