Ancient civilizations didn't just use signs for direction, they used them for magic. Like, actual magic. As in, "Hey, this sign will make the crops grow." or "This sign will make the rain stop." It was a wild time.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and signs became all about telling people where to go, what to do, and who to blame for everything.
