Step 1: Create a plausible reason for why you're late with payment.

My cat has cancer.
I've been held hostage by a group of highly trained, ninja accountants.
I've been abducted by aliens who require me to perform the Macarena for their entertainment.

Step 2: Act as if you're genuinely sorry, but also completely incapable of paying.

Step 3: Offer to make it up to them in "exposure" or "in kind" or some other vague, yet somehow believable, alternative.

Chapter 4: The Dance of the Checks

Step 1: Create a series of increasingly ridiculous checks, each with a different expiration date and slightly varying amounts.

Step 2: Send these checks to the payee with a letter explaining that you're "working on it."

Step 3: Repeat this process until you've exhausted all possible excuses and the payee has given up hope.
