Etymological Rants of a Lexionographer

Etymology is a thing, I suppose.

Here's one for you:

A friend of mine, a linguist, once asked me to write an etymology of the word 'lexicographer'. I said, 'No, that's not a real word.' He said, 'Yes, it is.' I said, 'No, you're just making it up.'

He said it's a word that refers to someone who writes dictionaries. I said, 'That's not a word.' He said, 'Yes, it is.' I said, 'Fine, but only if it's a word that refers to someone who writes dictionaries, and not just anyone who writes dictionaries.'

He said, 'That's a distinction without a difference.' I said, 'No, it's a distinction that's not a difference.' He said, 'You're being semantic.' I said, 'I'm being precise.'
