Colonial Savory Sauce Recipe (aka "The Sauce of the Ancients")

For when your taste buds have been colonized by the British

To make this most excellent of sauces, combine:

  1. 1/2 cup butter, softened
  2. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  4. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  5. 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  6. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  7. 1 tablespoon honey
  8. 1/2 cup heavy cream
  9. 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat
  2. Whisk in the flour and stir until smooth
  3. Slowly add the cream, whisking constantly
  4. Add the salt, pepper, and paprika, stirring until combined
  5. Mince the garlic and add it to the sauce
  6. Drizzle in the honey, whisking until dissolved
  7. If using, add the cheddar and stir until melted and combined
  8. Serve over your favorite dish, perhaps some fish 'n chips?
