When in doubt, blame the internets. "I was trying to troubleshoot the server, but it was a bit too much for me, I'm afraid."

Or, if that doesn't fly, claim you were in a meeting about meetings. "I was attending the meeting about meeting attendance and productivity, and it went on for hours."

Or, if all else fails, just claim you were reorganizing your sock drawer. "It's a long story, but let's just say I had to reorganize my sock drawer, and it's still not done."
